DEXTER – “My Dad and I grew up in the same Pennsylvania town. He was gay and I am gay. He killed himself and I became a lesbian cartoonist.”
That’s the caption that cartoonist Alison Bechdel used to encapsulate
her complicated relationship with her father, Bruce, a funeral director and
English language arts teacher.
It’s also a terse revelation that comes very early in Fun Home, Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori’s musical adaption of Alison Bechdel’s masterpiece of a graphic memoir of the same name. The 90-minute show runs through Oct. 13 at The Encore Musical Theatre in Dexter.
Giving away the ending, in this case, doesn’t make the storytelling any less powerful. And really it is understood before you go. It’s not a spoiler.
This show is about as intimate as theater gets. It’s a study
